Hi! My name is Annelle “Nellie” Brunson, and I am a rising master’s student in history at UGA. Joining the humanities with a background in accounting, I hope to draw upon my experience of using data visualizations to draw attention to historic patterns.
As for my project this summer, I am interested in using early Athens death certificates to create an interactive, spatial exhibition to better understand how geography is intertwined with the ways in which people died—or thought they were dying. Extracting causes of death and local addresses from mortality records, I hope to build a map that shows where individuals and families died, as well as highlight any concentrations of particular causes. I think geographic information systems pose an opportunity for scholars to collaborate with technology specialists and the public to visualize historical events (or trends) at a scale previously impossible.
